Melania Trump 'isn't reciprocal' as Donald Trump tries to share intimate moment

Rose Garden Signing Draws Attention for More Than Policy

The Rose Garden event on October 19 was meant to spotlight a new federal push on women’s health. But once a short clip of the president and first lady began circulating online, much of the conversation moved away from the policy itself and toward a few seconds of body language.

What the Executive Order Does

Trump’s order sets up a task force with a stated aim of raising the bar for women’s health care across the country. The White House framed it as a significant step, and the signing was staged as a public ceremony with the first lady seated at the president’s side.

After the paperwork was done, the two stayed in their seats for photographs. That is where the moment that went viral took place.

The Moment That Went Viral

According to the footage, Trump turned to Melania and leaned in for a kiss. She angled her face away, so the kiss fell on her cheek. He then reached for her hand in what looked like the start of a handshake, but he patted the back of her hand instead.

The clip was shared widely on social media, and viewers were quick to weigh in. Some critics questioned what the interaction said about the couple, while others saw little more than a brief, ordinary gesture caught at an awkward angle.

What the Body Language Expert Said

Chris Pardoe, a body language expert, reviewed the video and offered his reading to The Irish Star. In his view, the first lady didn’t seem to be having a good time. “To my eye, she doesn’t look like she’s enjoying it,” he said, pointing to the lack of a squeeze back, any softening in her expression, or a lean toward her husband. Her hand, he noted, simply stayed where it was while the president did all the work.

Pardoe went further, describing the exchange as one-sided. He characterized it as one person acting while the other politely put up with it, rather than a moment shared between two people. He also stressed that it was the president who initiated the contact.

A Note on Reading Too Much Into a Clip

It’s worth remembering that body language analysis is interpretation, not fact. A few seconds of video, shot in front of cameras at a formal event, can’t reveal what either person was thinking or feeling. Public appearances like this are also carefully staged, which can make small, unscripted moments stand out more than they otherwise would.
